History of England's Newest City...

As you enter Preston in your limousine, you may not realise that this riverside town has roots going back as far as 705 when the lands near the River Ribble were set on new foundations and the parish church was erected. Years later Edward the Elder passed the lands to cathedral at York and through a number of subsequent transfers, the lands were passed around between the churches, earning the little town the title, Priest Town or Preston.

It is also said that the name Priest Town refers to a priory set up by St Wilfrid near the river’s lowest ford. This theory is reinforced by the similarity between the lamb on the crest of Preston, and St Wilfrid’s banner.

The location of the city of Preston was also found to be of strategic importance in the decisive battles of the English Civil War in 1643 and the first Jacobite rebellion in 1715. Both were fought in Preston which is almost exactly halfway between Glasgow and London.

Preston is a city rich in history and you want to make sure you have as much time to explore as possible.
